The Institute of Virology and Cell Biology at the University of Luebeck (Director: Univ.-Prof. Dr. N. Tautz) is seeking for a PhD student (m/f/d) at the nearest possible time with a working time of 65% of the regular weekly hours (currently 25,16 hours per week), limited for 3.5 years. The position is intended to lead to a PhD.

Institute of Virology and Cell Biology

The student will be part of DFG-funded Research Training Group RTG2887 „VISualization and imaging of virus infectION“(VISION). The RTG is aiming to train a new generation of virologists to use cutting-edge imaging techniques thereby establishing an integrative structural virology approach to better understand the complexity of mechanisms and biological functions in the course of viral infections.

The title of the project C03 within the RTG is "Structural and functional characterisation of the hepaci- and pestiviral NS2-NS3 polyprotein region". The project is part of one of the main biological areas of interest within the RTG that aims to characterize molecular switches in the viral life cycle.

Tasks:

  • Independent research on structural and functional characterization of the hepaci- and pestiviral NS2-NS3 polyprotein region
  • Publications at scientific conferences and in journals

Requirements:

  • University master degree in biology, molecular life sciences, biochemistry or a related field
  • ability to work independently in a team
  • high level of commitment
  • expertise in basic molecular biology and biochemical techniques
  • practical experience in working with proteins and knowledge of protein expression/purification as well as virology of plus-strand RNA viruses are advantageous.
