University of Lübeck and Fraunhofer Society in the Computer Science/Technology section at the Institute for Medical Technology

The appointment is subject to §§ 61 and 63 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition to the university role, the professorship will also assume a leadership role at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Individualized and Cell-Based Medical Engineering (Fraunhofer IMTE) following the "Karlsruhe Model". This professorship is part of the state of Schleswig-Holstein’s AI Professorship Program and aims to strengthen and promote innovative AI technologies at the interface between hardware and software.

The University of Lübeck and Fraunhofer IMTE have a long-standing collaboration in the development of smart medical technologies and systems. Their joint focus lies in transferring innovative solutions into practical applications to contribute to a healthier society.

We are seeking a candidate of international standing who will represent the field of Biomedical Signal Processing in both research and teaching. The professorship is located at the intersection of computer science, biomedical engineering, sensor technology, and microsystems technology. The focus is on the development of intelligent, sensor-integrated systems for the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of biological signals for medical applications in prevention, diagnosis, therapy, and rehabilitation.

The professorship is characterized by software and hardware innovation, with particular emphasis on combining AI methods with novel sensor principles. Central research topics include miniaturized, multimodal sensor systems with high sensitivity and specificity, based on established technologies (e.g., acoustic, optical, or mechanosensitive sensors), as well as emerging approaches such as flexible electronics, bio-inspired materials, or micro-/nano-structured systems.

The position is expected to actively contribute to the initiation and participation in collaborative research projects at the University of Lübeck, Fraunhofer IMTE, and partner institutions such as the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Experience in acquiring third-party funding and working with industry partners is desirable.
