PhD student (m/f/d) VuZ

Virology and Cell Biology

The Institute of Virology and Cell Biology of the University of Lübeck (Director: Univ.-Prof. Dr. N. Tautz) is searching for a PhD candidate to drive a research project investigating the role played by the host cell lipid droplets in the antiviral innate immune response within the research group of Dr. Gabrielle Vieyres.
Innate immunity is the cell´s first line of defense against viral infections and culminates in the execution of a broad antiviral programme involving the induction of hundreds of antiviral factors raised in response to pathogen detection. While viruses have evolved to compartmentalize their replication cycle across different cell organelles, the innate immune response itself is tightly orchestrated in time and space and involves several subcellular organelles or compartments. The research group “Cell biology of RNA viruses” of Gabrielle Vieyres unravels the compartmentalization of viral infections and innate immune responses (https://www.vuz.uni-luebeck.de/research/cell-biology/research-group-vieyres/).

Tasks:

The successful candidate will work on a project funded by the German Research Foundation (https://gepris.dfg.de/gepris/projekt/531424650) that aims to unravel the role played by the lipid droplet organelle in exerting and regulating the antiviral innate immune response. To answer this question, the student will have access to a panel of experimental methods, ranging from molecular and cellular biology, to biochemistry, virology and high-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques.

Requirements:

  • MSc degree or equivalent with focus on Cell Biology, Virology, Human Biology or related disciplines
  • Enthusiasm for basic research, talent and strong self-motivation
  • Ability to independently plan experiments, develop methods, perform complex analyses and accurately document the results
  • Eagerness to work in a team and very good communication skills
  • Very good English skills
  • Prior experience in innate immunity, virology or advanced fluorescence microscopy will be considered an asset.

What we offer:

  • a three-year PhD position, starting in 2025 (starting date can be discussed)
  • a diverse spectrum of techniques (cell and molecular biology, virology, high resolution fluorescence microscopy)
  • Excellent and state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research environment
  • Support for your scientific career and the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree
  • Operational pension scheme
  • Flexible working hours
  • Mobile working
  • Compatibility of family and work
  • NAH-SH/ Deutschland public transport ticket, access to university sports facilities, discounts at the canteen on campus and many other perks
  • Health management programme “Healthy University”
  • Training opportunities
  • Pay in accordance with the current tariff if the tariff requirements are met, up to pay grade E13 TV-L. Subject to a final job evaluation.

Classification will be in accordance with the automatic pay scale if the requirements of the pay scale are met up to the pay group listed above. A final job evaluation remains reserved.
